Are you struggling with Chronic Pain?

The wider impact of dealing with chronic pain.

Chronic pain is defined as pain which is constant and lasts for longer than 12 weeks or beyond the expected time period for healing to occur following  surgery or trauma.

Having seen the effects of chronic pain, I am fully aware of the impact it can have on someone’s ability to function well. Often going hand in hand with disrupted and impaired sleep; exhaustion, lack of focus and even despair can set in. The side effects from taking pain killers can add to feelings of fatigue and may produce other symptoms like dizziness and digestive issues.

In this situation many people try complementary  therapies in an attempt to take back some control and begin to manage their pain. Studies show the effectiveness of hypnotherapy in alleviating pain and the emotional distress associated with it:

“…findings indicate that hypnosis interventions consistently produce significant decreases in pain associated with a variety of chronic-pain problems. Also, hypnosis was generally found to be more effective than non-hypnotic interventions such as attention, physical therapy, and education.”

Gary Elkins, Texas A & M University College of Medicine, Mark P. Jensen and David R. Patterson, University of Washington School of Medicine, Seattle, Washington. 2009.

Imagine your life where you are successfully managing pain.

Hypnotherapy uses visualisation techniques and metaphor to focus your thinking on positive outcomes. Deep relaxation can be achieved through hypnosis or a trance state and this makes you more receptive to the present moment, enjoying life more and coping better on a day to day basis. Negatively forecasting the future with unhelpful thoughts like: ‘I’ll never be free of this pain’ or ‘How am I going to cope with this if it doesn’t stop?’ become less prevalent and eventually subside as your confidence and happiness levels increase.

How can Solution Focused Hypnotherapy help?

As a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist I will tell you about how the brain works in relation to chronic pain; why you are suffering in the way you do and what we can do about it. You will gain an understanding of how hypnotherapy can be used to redirect your focus away from the pain sensations. Hypnosis can help to transform your perception of pain and even affect the pain messages from their source, making them slower and less powerful.

Using self-hypnosis at home can help you manage chronic pain in the long term, freeing you up to live your life with increased confidence and well-being.

If you would like to learn more about what I do, you can book a FREE initial consultation and hear my ‘brain talk’ for yourself. Begin to take back control and feel happier.

Tired of too little Sleep?

Tired of too little Sleep

The evenings are getting lighter and the clocks will be going forward, adding more daylight hours. This has a positive impact on our mood, especially if we are spending lots of time outside.

But what if you are struggling with insomnia and are unable to fully enjoy each day. Maybe you are drained of energy, irritable and find it difficult to concentrate and do the things you need to do and want to do.

It is estimated that as many as a third of adults and two thirds of teenagers are not getting enough sleep.

These are the recommended number of hours:

  • School children 6-13 years: 9-11 hours
  • Teenagers 14-17 years: 8-10 hours
  • Adults: 7-8 hours

Establishing good routines and behaviours to promote sleep; known as sleep hygiene, can help. This could include:

  • Establishing a regular sleep schedule
  • Limiting daytime napping
  • Avoiding vigorous physical exercise and intense mental stimulation too close to bedtime
  • Avoiding stimulants such as caffeine, nicotine and alcohol in the late evening
  • Limiting your exposure to bright light in the hours leading up to bedtime
  • Creating a peaceful, comfortable, dark sleeping environment
  • Limiting the use of electronic devices in the bedroom
  • Exercising regularly
  • Scheduling time to unwind and relax

Maybe you have tried all these things and are still struggling, becoming more anxious about not sleeping. This can create a vicious circle where your anxiety increases and sleep becomes even more elusive.

Hypnotherapy can help

Research shows that stress, anxiety and depression are some of the most common causes of insomnia. Thankfully, hypnotherapy can be a very effective tool in overcoming sleep difficulties. By tackling the underlying stress and promoting a greater sense of well-being, hypnotherapy can help you overcome anxiety and depression.

One of the first things my clients notice after just a few sessions is that they are sleeping better. The impact this has on their ability to cope, regulate their emotional responses and deal with challenges is incredibly positive.

Tinnitus keeping you awake?

Tinnitus is usually linked to hearing loss and part of the ageing process. It can also be caused as a result of exposure to loud noise or ear conditions. It is estimated that about 1 in 10 adults in the UK have tinnitus.

People with tinnitus experience sounds in the ear that aren’t produced by external stimuli. These sounds can be constant, intermittent or pulsating and occur in one or both ears. Sounds commonly  range from hissing, sizzling, buzzing, whooshing, white noise or even hearing fragments of tunes or songs.

Tinnitus can be very distressing and can result in hearing difficulties, anxiety and difficulty sleeping.

Hypnotherapy can help reduce the stress produced by tinnitus. Self-hypnosis can be used as a tool to promote relaxation and break down unhelpful thought patterns in the subconscious mind that are creating a stress response. Sleep can be achieved by allowing both the mind and body to relax.

Chronic pain may also be preventing you from sleeping well. Hypnotherapy can be a useful tool. Research shows hypnosis can significantly reduce pain associated with a range of chronic pain conditions. Read more about this in my April blog.

Do you need a Spring clean?

Do you need a spring clean?

Did you know February is named after the purification ritual ‘Februa’;  an old Roman spring cleaning festival.

Are YOU ready for a spring clean? Does your mind feel cluttered and leave you with a feeling of being overwhelmed and unable to focus. Maybe your home is a mess and this is bogging you down, holding you back. Are you living in the past?

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy does not involve delving into the past and sifting through what has been. It is about embracing the ‘now’ and moving on in a positive way. Many clients report that they are de-cluttering and rearranging their living space after just a few sessions of hypnotherapy. Such positive action can perpetuate many more benefits that promote well-being:

Are you just ‘keeping your head above water’?

A more obscure fact is that February is only mentioned in one of Shakespeare’s plays; ‘Much Ado about Nothing’.

When we are overwhelmed and just ‘surviving’; getting by, we can scatter our energy and lose focus. Excess and/or prolonged stress can drain us emotionally and deplete our motivation and sense of excitement about the future. Negative’ overthinking’, when viewed from a healthier, positive viewpoint, can be seen as a lot of fuss over nothing. Most of the things we negatively forecast don’t ever happen! Making mountains out of molehills is exhausting and only serves to perpetuate stressful thoughts and feelings! It just doesn’t make sense. Hypnotherapy can help you break free of unhelpful thought patterns, redirecting your thinking towards taking positive action and focussing efforts on activities which are beneficial and self-affirming. Again, the benefits of changing your thinking in a positive way are far reaching.

Do you have healthy self-love?

Not forgetting the notion of romantic love celebrated on St. Valentine’s day, especially pertinent to couples but also those who are single. I like the idea I heard recently of a group of single friends getting together and celebrating their friendship. This included writing little notes about specific things they loved about each other and small thoughtful gifts as tokens of their appreciation. This notion could be extended further to the love shared by carers and children, family members, colleagues and even humans and pets! Remembering and celebrating our positive connections and interactions with others is good for our mental and emotional health.

What is, perhaps, the most important relationship we will ever have?  The relationship we have with ourselves. What is your self-talk like? Is it positive, supportive, encouraging and loving? A good measure of this is to compare how you treat yourself to how you would behave towards a good friend? Are they very different? Is it time for you to reassess your automatic responses and make positive changes? Click on the link to find some useful tips to help you develop more self-compassion and enjoy the benefits of reduced stress and increased productivity:

Negative self-speak is common when we experience high anxiety, anger or depression. If our stress levels are too high we can engage in black and white thinking; catastrophizing events in our lives and being oblivious to the wider picture and a more rational way of seeing things.

Maybe you are struggling to break free from negative thinking and self-sabotage. Hypnotherapy can help you develop the ability to manage stress, overcome negative thinking and move forward with confidence and healthy self-esteem. I have helped many people tap into their innate strengths, capabilities and special qualities, also discovering new aspects of themselves as they realise their full potential, becoming the person they were meant to be!

Struggling to achieve your New Year’s Resolutions?

Even though your intentions were so good.

Frustration can set in…

You had everything mapped out, in place. You were ‘good to go’…. It worked for a while but then you hit a mental block?

You are not alone. Research shows the majority of us (a staggering 80%) don’t achieve our New Year’s goals.

Our Comfort Zone

It is fantastic to have worthwhile goals and that accompanying sense of excitement and achievement as we work towards them.  In the process, we begin to step out of our comfort zone, our state of being that we have become accustomed to and interpret as ‘safe’ because we ‘survived’ and had our basic needs met.

Stepping out of this zone can feel threatening, even though, logically and on a practical level, we know the changes we have identified for ourselves such as managing our weight better, quitting smoking and reducing our alcohol intake, will benefit us and, most likely, increase our ability to perform well.  Not to mention the increase in our happiness levels!

Anxiety or Excitement?

It is natural to experience some anxiety as we make changes.  From a wider perspective this uncomfortable feeling could be reframed as excitement and anticipation as we embrace the new, face our fears and expand our comfort zone to include new thoughts and new ways of behaving. We will also be developing a wider range of skills that benefit us.  If you feel scared at times, this is showing you that you are indeed changing! When learning new ways of thinking and being we will stumble at times… because we are learning. It would be great if our progress was linear and straight forward, but that expectation is unrealistic. Mistakes offer fertile ground for more learning, flexibility and compassion towards ourselves.  Keeping a good, realistic perspective is so important and hypnotherapy can help you achieve this; encouraging you to develop a more positive mindset and ‘can do’ attitude.

You might be thinking; ‘well that’s easier said than done’. This is where confidence is crucial. To be confident in your ability to achieve your worthwhile goals. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy helps you ‘walk the talk,’ taking practical steps towards making those goals happen. Your confidence levels will naturally increase as you keep a good perspective; being fully aware of your progress, however big or small. Hypnotherapy can make you much more receptive to change so that you can continue to move forward at a pace that is right for you.

Hypnotherapy for children

Are you concerned about your child?

As a parent myself, I know how upsetting it can be when your child is struggling and nothing seems to be working to improve the situation. It can leave you feeling helpless and overwhelmed.

Hypnotherapy can be an effective way of helping children and young people cope better; building confidence, resilience and essential life skills.

Underlying many conditions is an overload of stress and anxiety. If left unchecked, this can become evident in certain behaviours.

Maybe your child is having difficulty regulating their emotions.

Anxiety can build up over time and then spill out in explosive ways. In my hypnotherapy sessions I use the metaphor of a full ‘stress bucket’ which can sometimes overflow.

Key to gaining more control over our emotions and actions is to reduce stress and focus more on the positives and solutions to problems. When we continue to feel more relaxed and calm in our everyday lives; our ‘stress buckets’ begin to empty, so that catastrophic thinking and irrational behaviours can be avoided.

Children who are defiant and oppositional may be suffering from heightened anxiety.

Disrupted or insufficient sleep

When our sleep cycles are interrupted or we are lacking in sleep it has a direct effect on our reactions and behaviour. This can be particularly challenging to deal with in children and affect their ability to cope and do well at school.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help your child reduce the stress and anxiety which are often the underlying causes of changes in sleep patterns. As your child becomes calmer and more in control they will gain the confidence needed to cope better and maintain a positive outlook.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or OCD

OCD in children can manifest itself in various ways; from fear of germs to obsessive rituals such as checking and rechecking doors are locked and even intrusive thoughts.

Hypnotherapy addresses the underlying anxiety behind obsessive and compulsive behaviours. The aim is to get your child back on track so that they are more in control and can fully embrace the things they love doing.

Nail biting and hair pulling

Hypnotherapy can be very helpful in breaking down harmful behavioural patterns and behaviours; replacing them with new ways of behaving that promote relaxation and wellbeing.

By addressing anxiety hypnotherapy can help overcome these issues and much more.

The good news is hypnotherapy can be very effective in lowering stress levels in children. I have helped children and young people overcome low confidence, low self-esteem and other issues that have been holding them back. They go on to do be brave, happy and confident in their own abilities; fully able to embrace opportunities.

Looking to feel more fulfilled in life?

Are you looking to find more fulfilment in life?

Maybe your children have left home and you are in the process of redefining your role and goals; exploring what makes you tick now you have more time to devote to yourself?

Going through life changes can be challenging and leave us feeling ‘at sea’ as we adjust to these changes and seek to feel comfortable and able to move forward with confidence.

This period in our lives could feel like a ‘mid life crisis’. Hypnotherapy can help you feel calm, confident and in control as you navigate through these challenges so that this transition can be experienced as positive and enriching.

Struggling through the menopause? Hypnotherapy can help alleviate the symptoms of hormonal changes.

Middle age can also bring physical challenges as women’s bodies go through hormonal changes. Many women put up with associated symptoms which include hot flushes, mood swings and disturbed sleep patterns. Hypnotherapy can help you effectively deal with these changes so that the symptoms are reduced and you can continue to enjoy life and feel confident.

Research carried out by The North American Menopause Society concludes there is solid evidence that hypnotherapy is beneficial for the treatment of menopause.

Maybe anxiety is gnawing away at you as you struggle to cope with everyday life?

Anxiety can be caused by events or it can build up gradually if we experience stress for long periods. When we reflect on the past or forecast future events in a negative way we cause our stress levels to rise. We may then find that we respond with excessive anger and frustration to minor irritations which can even prove to be the ‘last straw’ which leaves us floundering.

Hypnotherapy helps alleviate the stress which is the root cause of anxiety.

I practise Solution Focused Hypnotherapy which doesn’t delve into the past. My approach is all about working from where you are now and moving forward in a positive way that builds confidence and helps you make positive changes in your life.

Do you need a new sense of direction?

Having a sense of purpose leads you to greater contentment and happiness.

When your role in life shifts it can leave you feeling empty and uncertain. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can facilitate your quest to find what will inspire and fulfil you. The next step is to build your confidence and self-esteem so that you can take positive action to enjoy each day as you work towards realising your goals. With this comes a sense of meaning and purpose. When you are fully committed to change you will reap the benefits; feeling happy and inspiring others to do the same!

At Emma Victoria Hypnotherapy I offer a FREE Initial Consultation where you can meet me and find out more about what I do. It will also give me the opportunity to understand where you are in your life right now and what you would like to achieve. So that you can be the wonderful, vibrant person that you truly are!

Life becoming too much of a juggling act?

Is life becoming too much of a juggling act?

Are you seeking a better balance between your work life and family commitments?

Do you feel like you are juggling too many tasks at once? Are you beginning to wonder if you can cope?  This can lead to a feeling of being overwhelmed and raises your stress levels so that you may start to experience anxiety related issues like panic attacks, eating disorders, weight management, insomnia, IBS, OCD and difficulty in your relationships.

Managing different aspects of your life more effectively will enhance your relationships with others and, most importantly, yourself.

Low self-esteem

Recognising what is helpful for you and building on this develops self-esteem and the ability to really care for yourself. You are then in a position to change unhelpful behaviours which may take the form of eating disorders, fears and addictions.

Hypnotherapy can help you adopt positive behaviours so that you can live your life in a way that resonates with your values and explore your true potential.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Did you know that IBS or irritable bowel syndrome is stress related and affects 1 in 5 people?

Research shows that hypnotherapy can be an effective treatment and is recognised by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). Not only can hypnotherapy help you manage the symptoms of IBS; it can also have a more wide reaching positive impact on your life where  your overall sense of happiness and wellbeing increases.

Perhaps you are struggling with fertility issues. Being in a calm, relaxed state increases your chances of increasing both naturally and with fertility treatment. Hypnotherapy can help you achieve a successful outcome.

Research suggests there is clinical proof that hypnotherapy can assist women with fertility issues. The link between mind and body is an important factor when dealing with infertility. Hypnotherapy can be a very useful tool for couples who are experiencing difficulty conceiving.

Obsessional Compulsive Disorder

Are obsessive behavioural patterns taking up too much of your time and energy, effecting your daily life and preventing you from spending more time doing the things you really enjoy?  I have helped clients with OCD gain a more balanced perspective and change their behaviours so they have more time to relax, feel at ease and do what they love!
