Tips to help you see a bright future

1. Envisage future possibilities and take positive action

I can’t help but smile when I hear Timbuk 3’s pop song ‘The Future’s So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades’. Wouldn’t that be good.

These past few days I have had time to think and it has felt like I am spring cleaning my mind. I have explored the possibility of letting go of old ways of thinking and making space for the new. This has motivated me and made me more open to the possibility of a bright future!

A key part of really achieving this is to motivate ourselves and then take steps to make it happen. These tips might help to get you thinking, and then take action.

2. Get motivated and create future opportunities

So what do you do if you are really struggling right now and taking those initial steps is proving difficult?

As we continue to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, it is good to raise awareness about the impact this might be having an impact on our mental health and wellbeing.

Perhaps you are a student or your child is currently struggling at University. This month celebrates University Mental Health Day: https://www.unimentalhealthday.co.uk/ Social interaction with fellow students is an incredibly enriching and important aspect of University life, making lockdowns especially challenging. This can apply to all of us.

Look at what you can do

Loneliness can lead to depression, disrupted sleep and even impact on our immune system. Not helpful if we are looking to feel more optimistic about the future and ready to embrace or create opportunities. Milton Berle states this in his well-known quote:

‘If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door.’

Exploring our options

So when the going gets tough for all of us, creating opportunities or making the most of what we can do, is crucial. Many people have made the most of the internet to stay connected. Others are chatting safely over hedges in their gardens. Being resourceful and creating opportunities, against the odds, can ignite hope and motivate us to keep taking positive action.

3. Get creative

In his internationally acclaimed TED talk, Creativity expert Sir Ken Robinson talks about the value of creativity within education. He also reminds us that unpredictability is an inherent part of  the future.

We have all been living with uncertainty this past year or so. This can alert our primitive, emotional brain and put us on edge; ready to fight, flee or freeze if necessary. Ken Robinson talks about getting in touch with our authentic selves and being resourceful and creative in the way we approach life. A client recently said to me:

‘I finally feel like I am in touch with my real self!’. She was so excited by this revelation.

Being innovative in our approach can also give us a satisfying sense of doing things in our own unique way. When we feel more fulfilled and satisfied in the present; it can be easier to envisage good things happening in the future.

4. Positively change the way you think

Solution focused hypnotherapy encourages us to focus more on flexible ways of thinking. This can help us build self-belief and confidence as we become more open to doing things differently. In this way we are more likely to embrace future opportunities.

Our primitive, emotional mind

In addition, this can move us out of our primitive mind where the fight/flight amygdala region of our thinking can take over. Yes, of course we will run away if a polar bear is coming towards us. But being on red alert, just in case danger is lurking, is unhelpful. Anxiety, depression and anger are created by negative thinking, where we are more likely to focus on the worst case scenarios. This can have a negative impact on how we see the future.

Our intellectual, sensible mind

Unless there is a polar bear standing in front of us; it is far more useful to be in the intellectual, sensible part of our brains. When this becomes more our usual way of thinking it can help us to feel confident in our ability to make good judgements and respond well in all situations. Tapping into our creativity, flexibility and ability to come up with solutions also helps us to deal with the unexpected; as we move forward. We can then feel more confident about coping well with future changes.

So thinking more positively and tanking up on resilience is really worthwhile during times of increased change and unpredictability.

5. Focus on what you can do now

Using hypnotherapy, I have supported many people as they find ways to overcome stress and anxiety. They are then able to feel calmer, tap into their inner resources and find solutions to problems.

Serotonin

Maintaining positive interactions with others can help significantly towards generating the feel good hormone serotonin and motivate us to do more of what we know is good for us.

I have seen even the most technologically averse get outside their comfort zone and now regularly interact through video calls. Other clients are feeling more connected to people in their communities by greeting them on their daily walk. The focus is on what we can do and reaping the benefits in the present, which puts us in a better position to handle the future.

‘The best preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today.’  H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

6. Believe in yourself and aim high

As a species, humans have had to learn how to adapt to survive and evolve. Where hypnotherapy can help is, not just with surviving and getting by, but also with the idea we can thrive.

Stimulating motivation, thinking creatively and actively taking steps to make things happen are powerful catalysts for beneficial change. Hypnotherapy can help you stay calm, focused and on track. in this way, we can move towards our truly authentic and best self.
