The wider impact of dealing with chronic pain.
Chronic pain is defined as pain which is constant and lasts for longer than 12 weeks or beyond the expected time period for healing to occur following surgery or trauma.
Having seen the effects of chronic pain, I am fully aware of the impact it can have on someone’s ability to function well. Often going hand in hand with disrupted and impaired sleep; exhaustion, lack of focus and even despair can set in. The side effects from taking pain killers can add to feelings of fatigue and may produce other symptoms like dizziness and digestive issues.
In this situation many people try complementary therapies in an attempt to take back some control and begin to manage their pain. Studies show the effectiveness of hypnotherapy in alleviating pain and the emotional distress associated with it:
“…findings indicate that hypnosis interventions consistently produce significant decreases in pain associated with a variety of chronic-pain problems. Also, hypnosis was generally found to be more effective than non-hypnotic interventions such as attention, physical therapy, and education.”
Gary Elkins, Texas A & M University College of Medicine, Mark P. Jensen and David R. Patterson, University of Washington School of Medicine, Seattle, Washington. 2009.
Imagine your life where you are successfully managing pain.
Hypnotherapy uses visualisation techniques and metaphor to focus your thinking on positive outcomes. Deep relaxation can be achieved through hypnosis or a trance state and this makes you more receptive to the present moment, enjoying life more and coping better on a day to day basis. Negatively forecasting the future with unhelpful thoughts like: ‘I’ll never be free of this pain’ or ‘How am I going to cope with this if it doesn’t stop?’ become less prevalent and eventually subside as your confidence and happiness levels increase.
How can Solution Focused Hypnotherapy help?
As a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist I will tell you about how the brain works in relation to chronic pain; why you are suffering in the way you do and what we can do about it. You will gain an understanding of how hypnotherapy can be used to redirect your focus away from the pain sensations. Hypnosis can help to transform your perception of pain and even affect the pain messages from their source, making them slower and less powerful.
Using self-hypnosis at home can help you manage chronic pain in the long term, freeing you up to live your life with increased confidence and well-being.
