Hypnotherapy- a natural approach

KEY POINTS:

How the natural approach of hypnotherapy can:

  • Give you the motivation to get out more and explore the benefits of being in a natural environment.
  • Help you use all your senses to be in the moment.
  • Promote a good night’s sleep; an intrinsic part of good mental health.
  • Produce more feel good hormones; in healthy ways that reduce stress and help us feel more in control.
  • Encourage a relaxed state using hypnosis; through which we can turn off the fight, flight or freeze response and enjoy the many associated benefits.

Getting out more and being in nature

Research shows; there are far reaching benefits of connecting with nature.

Using evidence collected at the University of Washington; Professor Gregory Bratman cites:

‘…contact with nature is associated with increases in happiness, subjective well-being, positive affect, positive social interactions and a sense of meaning and purpose in life, as well as decreases in mental distress.’ (Science Advances, Vol.5, no. 7, 2019).

It could be our gardens, woodland, near water or in the mountains. Spending just half an hour in such an environment is effective. Even better; would be spending a few hours or a whole day. If you are experiencing anxiety, fatigue, depression, panic attacks or some other common issue, getting the motivation to do this can be challenging. This is where hypnotherapy can really help you.

Solution focused hypnotherapy

Solution focused hypnotherapy is a natural approach which encourages us to shift our thoughts away from focusing on what we perceive to be the problem and more towards the solution. This can help to kick start a new way of seeing things that creates a sense of hope and opportunity. We are then better equipped to overcome the stress response that can be triggered if we are thinking negatively for much of the time. Naturally choosing to engage in positive activities, like walking in nature, becomes easier because we are going to be much more focused on the associated positive gains. In time; these can effectively outweigh the perceived negatives.

By using our senses to explore the natural environment; such as pausing to smell the roses, listen to the birds and feel the grass beneath our feet; brings us into the present moment. We can then learn to quieten our minds if we are used to over-thinking and worrying about the past or the future.

Visualisation techniques used in hypnotherapy naturally support. Aspects of hypnosis, using natural imagery and positive suggestions can also create this response.

Sleep better

If we learn to focus more on the positives and potential solutions to our challenges; we reduce the negative thinking that can lead to anxiety, anger and depression. With practice, this becomes more habitual and our natural way of thinking. We are therefore in a much better position to manage challenging situations that invariably come our way, as we learn to navigate through difficult emotions and events.

Solution focused hypnotherapy encourages you to understand the processes involved that result in the stress response being triggered. We don’t have to contend with dangerous animals and tribesmen in modern day life. However, the primitive part of our mind that puts us into fight, flight of freeze mode can switch on even if our lives are not in immediate danger or crisis. Using hypnotherapy we can train our brains to maintain intellectual control when modern life becomes challenging. This natural approach puts in a better position to keep a good perspective and not give reign to unhelpful, negative thoughts.

This reduces the amount of stress in our lives. It is common for sleep problems to be stress related, so the impact of managing stress better can be huge in terms of sleeping better.

Increasing the release of feel good hormones

Through focusing on the positive aspects and taking a solution focused approach; we are encouraging increased production of the feel good hormones. These include serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin. In turn; this   motivates us to make good choices and carry them out; like developing good sleep routines, eating well, exercising more and being outdoors. All of these things contribute to good sleep.

When we feel happier and sleep better; our body’s natural healing processes can work more efficiently. Our brains can process events of the day during the REM or rapid eye movement phase of our sleep cycle. So anything that has upset us during the day isn’t carried into the next day. This natural process helps us to manage stress in the long term. Neuroscientist and sleep expert Professor Matt Walker describes this REM phase as ‘emotional first aid’.

The natural aspects of hypnosis

We actually go into a trance many times during the day. This commonly occurs when we are watching something light-hearted on TV, jogging, swimming, gardening or just staring out the window! Hypnosis is a very useful state to be in because we are focused on the positives, as we relax and have our goal in mind.  Entering into a state of hypnosis can help to calm down the stress response area of our brains.

This can be incredibly useful; especially if this red alert, hyper vigilant way of responding (even when there is no polar bear present; not even hiding around the corner) has been switched on for a long time. This makes it easier to consciously shift our thinking in positive ways. Because we are accessing the subconscious mind and getting it on board with creating a new perspective; it is better matched to a proper assessment of situations.

The exciting potentials within neuroplasticity

I am forever excited by neuroplasticity! In other words, this means we all have the potential to rewire our brains and change the way we think. All of us can therefore tap into this amazing ability. Because of this, we can take responsibility for our brains! Solution focused hypnotherapy can help us achieve this.
